Hi, I'm Will.
I build software for a living and trading research systems for fun. [One more line about what drives you, e.g. "I like systems that are honest about what they measure."]
Outside the terminal I run marathons and dance bachata, usually not on the same day.
Mochi
[Why you started it, e.g. "I spent six years trading futures by hand, and always wanted to know which of my ideas would have survived a proper test. Mochi is that test."]
It's a research platform for testing systematic trading ideas at scale. It cleans years of market data, simulates millions of variations of a strategy, and then tries hard to separate real effects from luck. I designed it, built it, and run it on a small Kubernetes cluster of my own.
The interesting part turned out not to be the simulation, but the statistics. With enough variations, something always looks profitable by chance. Most of the work has gone into making the platform honest: fixed thresholds instead of "pick the best 5%", testing on data the strategy never saw, and planting fake signals to check it can actually find them.
[The lesson you'd share, e.g. "The more carefully I measured, the fewer edges survived. That turned out to be the most useful result."]
- Built withRust for simulation, Python and DuckDB for analysis
- Runs onSelf-hosted Kubernetes, Argo Workflows, GitOps
- Scale[a number you're happy to share, e.g. setups tested or years of data]
What I'm up to
- [Something you're building or working on]
- [Something you're learning or reading]
- [A race you're training for, or another goal]
Running, dancing, and the occasional chart
Running
[A sentence or two: favourite race, best time, why you run.]
Bachata
[How you got into it, where you dance in Zurich, what you like about it.]
Markets
Before software took over, I spent six years trading index futures for myself. It taught me a lot about risk, and even more about how convincing noise can look.
[Anything else?]
[Another interest, or delete this block.]
The day job
I've spent twenty years building backend systems and the platforms they run on: first at the BBC and AutoTrader in the UK, then at UBS, Credit Suisse and now a private bank in Zurich. Mostly Java and Kotlin, lately a lot of Kubernetes. I like small teams, tests written first, and turning old monoliths into something people enjoy working on.
